Fish Species

Learning how many different types and species of fishes there are is quite breathtaking and perhaps almost impossible. Nevertheless, it is a truly satisfying and interesting thing to do if you love fishes and want to give them a truly happy and marvelous life. Setting your own fish tank or aquarium will let you have the most beautiful types of fishes and also admire them whenever you want. But to do so it is important for you to read some basic details about such fishes so you can really fulfill every need they may have.

Swordtail fishes are part of the Poeciliidae family and their genus is known as Xiphophorus. These are freshwater fishes as well as live bearers, which means that they breed their own eggs inside their bodies and release them once the fishes are young. Swordtail fishes are really varied and there are many types of them, being some of the most famous the Green swordtail fish (perhaps the most important for home aquariums and fish tanks), the Chiapas swordtail, the Yellow swordtail, the Highland swordtail, the Pygmy swordtail, the Marbled swordtail, the Sheepshead swordtail and the Montezuma swordtail among many others. They are native from the regions of Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico from where they take many of their names.

They are rather small fishes that hardly ever surpass 14 centimeters in long. They are close to the Platy fishes and can normally be seen together. They are omnivorous fishes and can eat both plants and vegetables as well as crustaceans, worms and insects. Finally, they are really hardy fishes and like to live in communities of several fishes.
