Koi fishes are believed to have originated in China in the early 4th century, but they are said to have become extremely popular in Japan in the 19th century where they were used as ornamental fishes in lakes and fish bowls of the richest families. It was until the beginnings of the 20th century when the Western civilization got in touch with them and therefore they are all over the world in aquariums and aquatic places. The Japanese word Koi means “carp” and this name makes reference to the colors that these fishes wear as carps. Koi fishes are more traditionally known as Nishikigoi, which means “brocaded carp” due to the complex designs these fishes have on their carp.

Koi fishes are to be found in lots of different colors, designs and varieties. They have been strictly bred by Japanese people and therefore we can say that these are the major and most popular varieties: Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, Showa Sanshoku, Tancho, Asagi, Shusui, Bekko, Utsurimono, Goshiki, Ogon, KinGinRin, Kawarimono, Doitsu-goi, Koromo, Hikari-Moyomono, Ghost Koi and Butterfly Koi. Every one of them has a different combination of colors and it is hard to find two fishes with the same skin pattern.

They are often seen and used in aquariums, park lakes and fish ponds because they are shining animals that attract every one’s attention, and we can assure you that you will surely stare at them for a long time simply because of the wonderful colors they have.

Koi are cold water fishes, and if you keep them in that ambience, you will be able to maintain them in a good health condition in almost any type of water pool. They are highly fertile, being able to produce up to thousands of eggs in one spawning. It is important for you to feed them with food that is especially made for Koi fishes because since it floats, it is meant to take them to the surface, where they can be seen and examined to see their healthy state.

They are definitely a good option if you want to give your water pool a nice and colorful touch but remember that they need to be taken care of regularly. If you do that, they will surely pay you off and you will love to have them near you.
