Informtion Jack Dempsey
They belong to the Cichlidae family, one of the largest fish families in the world. The particular name makes reference to the famous American boxer with the same name which had an aggressive and strong personality, just like this fish. The Jack Dempsey fish is native to the area of North and Central America, and they are especially found in the Yucatan Peninsula. However, it is also been seen in other regions such as Australia and Thailand. They are freshwater and tropical fishes and the ideal temperature range for their environment is around 22 to 30º C or 70 to 80º F.
Jack Dempsey fishes are extremely beautiful and colorful fishes that include several combinations of tones and metallic colors. This makes of them unique fishes and you won’t have an easy time trying to find two similar specimens so they will add quite a lot of distinction to your fish tank. In terms of size, they can reach up to 25 centimeters long becoming rather large fishes when adults. Feeding them properly is important and even though they tend to accept different types of fish food, you should take into consideration that these fishes can be aggressive and end up eating small fishes if they are not correctly fed. Experts suggest one or two times a day when adults and one to three times a day when young.
You should also know that even though these fishes are hardy animals that can easily adapt to different conditions, they tend to be territorial, especially towards fishes of their own kind. This is why although it is easy to keep, it requires a lot of control in order to avoid any possible attack. It can also become a problem with smaller fishes and in this sense the best thing to do is to consult an expert about the compatible fish species so you can really enjoy your aquarium.
Jack Dempsey fishes are definitely amazing and giving them a chance to surprise will always be a good idea. Take good care of them and enjoy them since day one.
