Hatchet Species
Hatchets fishes are freshwater and tropical fishes, mostly found in areas such as South America (especially in the Amazon River) and the Caribbean. These fishes belong to the Characidae family and can have different sizes, reaching in most of the cases a medium size of almost 7 centimeters, although some of them (such as the Marbled Hatchetfish) only reach up to 35 mm. Their name comes from the fact that they tend to have a rather large belly beneath their mouths.
