Undergravel aquarium filters are the ones that are meant to be placed below the gravel, and they function creating the movement of water needed through the gravel and breaking in this way the waste that might be left on top of it. Canister aquarium filters are the ones that work more since they usually have twice the size of other filters. Finally, wet/dry fish tank filters are the ones that are both in contact with the air and the water and are ideal for large aquariums.
